Words from the Pastor

About who we are and what we believe.

Hey there!

So glad you found us! I’ve been the pastor at Evergreen since the summer of 2020 (what a time to relocate and start a new job, right?!).

We’re small but strong, progressive yet still progressing, open and affirming, historic yet vibrant, and as quirky as we are loving. We have a great sense of humor and value that our members have a diversity of backgrounds in race, ethnicity, gender identity and expression, sexual and romantic orientation, and life experience, some of whom have been in the church for decades and some only a few years.

Your time is valuable, so here are the bullet points of what I want people to hear from me when they come to Evergreen:

  • Nothing in life nor death can separate you from the love of God.

  • You are worth more and God’s grace is bigger than the worst thing you’ve ever done.

  • Just because I say it from the pulpit doesn’t mean it’s the only way to be Christian.

  • Neither I, nor any other pastor has all the answers.

  • We’re called to follow Jesus (it’s less about strict beliefs), to love each other, and to cultivate a beloved community.

  • The Gospel of Jesus Christ is a social Gospel. Our job is to work for social justice, equity, liberation, and peace.

  • If you have no clue what you believe, Evergreen is a great fit for you.

  • My hope is that our collective and individual faith leads us to be open and affirming to LGBTQIA+ folx, actively anti-racist, and anti-colonization.

  • You belong to the Spirit of the living God, and Evergreen, as a church and community of faith, should do its best to embody that deep love of belonging to one another.

Feel free to shoot me an email at patrick@evergreenmemphis.org or drop in during office hours: (Monday & Tuesday, 9a-12p and Thursday, 9a-3p), and let’s grab coffee and chat.

Peace to you,

Patrick
